St. Francis Hospital
Microsoft SharePoint Server 2007 Streamlines Managed Documentation Records
St. Francis Hospital, founded in Columbus, Georgia, in 1950, is a 292-bed facility
that offers a comprehensive range of top-quality inpatient, outpatient and emergency
services to individuals and families throughout West Georgia. A private, not-for-profit
hospital, St. Francis is dedicated to meeting the healthcare needs of all patients
within the community, leading it to be named “Consumer Hospital of Choice”
in 2005-2006 by the National Research Corporation.
In addition to its primary suite of services, the hospital offers the only open heart
surgery program in the region through The Patrick Heart Institute of St. Francis,
which was established in 1974 to provide total cardiac care. St. Francis Hospital
is also home to the 84-bed mental health facility The Bradley Center of St. Francis,
the 60-apartment assisted living facility Franciscan Woods, The Women’s Center
of St. Francis, the Cancer Program of St. Francis, and Health Dynamics of St. Francis,
among other resources and services. Across these facilities, St. Francis boasts
approximately 1,400 employees and 350 boardcertified physicians.
When St. Francis Hospital needed a way to connect its various divisions and departments
and allow communication and collaboration between them, it employed Microsoft® Office
SharePoint® Server 2007 (MOSS) as the foundation for an updated and dynamic intranet
portal site. With hospital-specific information and applications easily accessible
through the intranet, employees are able to serve patients more efficiently and
ultimately uphold St. Francis’ vision and mission.
“Microsoft SharePoint Server 2007 will allow the IT department to easily manage
data and let them solve their document management, business intelligence and collaboration
issues across the company."

Case Study
- Situation
The St. Francis Hospital intranet was outdated and almost 100% static. A new version
of the intranet needed to be developed to integrate hospital, departments, projects
and third party applications and documentations.
- Solution
SharePoint Facilitates Increased Productivity
St. Francis used Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 (MOSS) to build its new
intranet based on the integrated server platform’s ability to help employees
increase their productivity. MOSS allows employees to locate and retrieve data faster
and more efficiently, share critical information across divisions and establish
more effective teams through features like unstructured document storage, structured
list storage and group collaboration.
Core Capabilities
SharePoint Server 2007 provides St. Francis with the following capabilities:
Central location in which to store and manage documents across the St. Francis care
continuum.
Simplified access to critical data and documents using powerful Enterprise Search.
Customizable document control through detailed, extensible policy management and
workflow.
Collaboration between employees through the use of knowledge management tools.
Simplified Web content management for creating, approving and publishing content
to the intranet.
Personalized experience with a dedicated site for each user, which can be used to
store, view and manage content, information and applications.
Portal Organization
SharePoint Server 2007’s customization capabilities let St. Francis build
an intranet that mirrors its own divisional structure. Pages and templates for hospital,
department and project levels were made available so information can remain organized
and each division can adhere to the hospital’s common vision for policies
and procedure applications.
- Benefits
With the successful implementation of a new intranet using SharePoint Server 2007,
St. Francis Hospital has created a user-friendly environment for storing and accessing
documents and applications, streamlining communication between employees and protecting
patient information.
Employee Productivity Enhanced
The new intranet portal site has simplified everyday activities for employees and
allowed them to provide patients with exceptional service and care. Each division
within the hospital has experienced and demonstrated improved decision making and
increased productivity thanks to the ability to search a variety of resources quickly
and retrieve important information easily. Furthermore, this has helped reduce administration
costs, as employees have a more efficient way to manage data in a unified content
management structure.
Collaboration Cultivated
Employees have enjoyed an increase in the quality and velocity of their communication
through the intranet portal site. In addition to having access to the same applications
and documentations across the organization, St. Francis employees now have a collaborative
workspace in which to meet and share information.
Patient Information Protected
SharePoint 2007’s security settings, storage policies, auditing policies and
expiration actions for records in accordance with compliance regulations give St.
Francis the power to protect patient information. Sensitive information is available
to employees through roles-based permissions, ensuring that content is not only
kept in a central and secure location, but also managed appropriately.
